The AIP’s Niels Bohr Library & Archives in College Park, MD is a repository and clearinghouse for information in the history of physics, astronomy, geophysics and allied fields. The library also stores a treasure trove of historical documentation that detail interactions between AIP, its past or current member societies, and SSP.
The following 1979 memorandum from SSP’s pro tem president Mark Carroll provides a fascinating glimpse of an early board meeting. File this under the “they-don’t-make-sipping-and-supping-meetings-like-they-used-to department!”
How wonderful that the invite was archived. It was a great evening with one of the highlights being a tour of The Carroll’s lovely home complete with a letterpress in the basement surrounded by typecases.
